About the event

SCIENCE INFORMING POLICY SYMPOSIUM SERIES

Healthy People in a Healthy Environment:Valuing the Health, Social and Cultural Benefits of Nature

Join leading experts from the medical, social sciences, Indigenous, NGO, government and industry sectors at this high-level event which will help focus Australia’s thinking on how to promote, protect and enhance the critical links between human health and social and cultural wellbeing, and the environment.

The seventh in the Australian Committee for IUCN's (ACIUCN) successful Science informing Policy symposium series, Healthy People in a Healthy Environment, will:

  • Showcase, improve understanding and promote the multiple health, social and cultural benefits of a healthy environment;
  • Highlight best practice case studies and the latest science on the benefits of a healthy environment;
  • Distil the social and cultural benefits of nature into national policy; and
  • Build the constituency of support for nature beyond the conservation sector.

The 2019 symposium is held in partnership with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science, WWF-Australia, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Australian Conservation Foundation and Bush Heritage Australia.

EVENING SIDE EVENT TUESDAY, 17 SEPTEMBER, 6.30 - 8.30pm

All symposium registrations include entry to the Networking for Nature side event at The Fox Hotel on the evening of Tuesday, 17 September. Join us in the trendy hotel's Arcadia Room for drinks and canapes to forge connections with fellow delegates, meet the event partners and celebrate ACIUCN's 40th anniversary. The hotel is located in easy walking distance from the Queensland Museum and the Brisbane CBD.

OUTPUT

The collaborative symposium will culminate in a workshop session during which delegates will have the opportunity to provide input into how the benefits of nature can be effectively distilled into policy and practice in Australia. These ideas will feed into the Ensuring Healthy People in a Healthy Environment Key Directions Statement which will be published and distributed to decision-makers nationally, regionally and internationally after the event.

SYMPOSIUM VENUE

The Symposium is being held in the historic Queensland Museum’s Lecture Theatre. Meals and workshop sessions will be hosted in the adjacent Terrace which boasts beautiful views over Brisbane city centre. The museum is easily accessible by public transport or is a short stroll away from the Brisbane CBD.

All delegates will have full access to the museum, which houses a host of innovative exhibits including the newly opened Display Centre and Wild State displays.
